Developing Your Research
A strong project starts with a clear question and grows through reading, experimentation, discussion, and revision. Topics and milestones are agreed with the advisor.
Connect a meaningful environmental question with appropriate data and methods.
Build skills in GIS, remote sensing, programming, modeling, and scientific communication.
Evaluate assumptions, validation quality, uncertainty, and practical limitations.
Produce organized analyses, well-supported writing, and reproducible research outputs.
Working Together
Meetings and Preparation
Agree on a meeting schedule with your advisor. Bring a concise update covering progress, evidence, challenges, decisions needed, and next steps. Record agreed actions after each meeting.
Research Integrity and Responsible AI
Report results honestly, cite sources, document methods, and protect confidential information. Verify AI-assisted work and disclose its use where required. Students remain responsible for the accuracy and originality of their work.
Collaboration and Co-authorship
Obtain the advisor's prior approval before initiating internal or external research collaborations, sharing research materials, or involving additional researchers. Proposed co-authors outside the team must have substantial, documented contributions that justify authorship. Discuss and approve proposed arrangements before making commitments, consistent with applicable authorship criteria.
Data, Code, and Communication
Preserve raw data, document processing steps, maintain backups, and use version control where practical. Share progress early, give respectful feedback, and inform the advisor promptly about delays or difficulties.
Suggested First-Month Plan
Week 01 — Connect
Meet the advisor, discuss interests, and agree on immediate priorities and communication.
Week 02 — Frame
Review the literature and draft your research question, objectives, and potential datasets.
Week 03 — Organize
Establish your project folders, data inventory, research log, and reproducibility plan.
Week 04 — Discuss
Present your proposed approach and refine a realistic semester plan with your advisor.
